love both these two. unclear why katy b looks so un-fierce in the video though ... i actually like that she wears sweats and whatnot, but her movements are so slow and offbeat and generally ineffectual -- really distracting from the song, which is almost a full on banger. dynamite gets it -- they film her with some real smiles and a few not-cute-but-doesn't-matter-because-she's-getting-down faces. but then they'll sort of fade in katy b looking like she's scared out of her mind and never done a video. i mean, i bet she dances hard, its a lot of what she sings about, so how come not in the video hmm?

attempt at critical, insightful analysis:

the video for this song had me cracking up. at least one person commenting on the vid struck an accusatory tone, saying that it was a rip-off of some other internet meme. i don't follow every last meme (is it even possible to do so?), so if you are in the know, please share.

first heard of this dude june 6th on peter rosenberg's late-night radio show (fm 97.1 in nyc, late sunday nights/early monday mornings). copped his latest album and am in agreement with mr. rosenberg that, in my own words, homeboy sandman is a nice, deep breath of fresh air. something totally different, intelligent, and fun.

in my humble, amateur opinion, his material is fantastic but is lacking something. i think right now his sound can be too whimsical... sometimes i get the impression he is rapping only to amuse himself. i'd be hard pressed to provide a reason why that's not a good reason to rap, and why anyone should rap, but i'd like to hear more from him in the future as he grows and is imbued with more urgent and responsible sensibilities that come to most people with age.

hey kids, you mighta copped f1rstperson's track seeing is believing here on suckmyart awhile back (which i just listened to again, and this line at the end: i'ma be f1rst, see you at the top ... and here we are). so here's the follow up from the MA-based artist f1rstperson. that first track was promising but "to the top" definitely ups the ante. the rhyming is tighter, the flow is sped up and on point. he has another well-chosen soul sample that provides needed depth, and uses it just enough to hook you in right.

so i'm watching NKOTB videos (i blame cat valente). well, two. i'm going to stop now. first i watched step by step and then cover girl. donnie was my favorite. although i'm proud to say that today there are no heart-quivers when i see his pasty legs through those ripped up jeans. but can we talk about bringing the 6 year old on stage at 1:15? was it really okay in um 1992 for grown men to croon to 6 year olds? really? i don't remember that. i mean, he acts appropriately chaste in those 30 seconds aside from the deep-eye-looking, but less than a minute prior he was doing crotch thrusts at the audience! i don't get it. i suppose he was the bad boy of the five, but still.

i have less thoughts on step by step. except that if i had no idea danny had so many muscles.

I just watched this again for the first time in years. And despite being surprised when she dropped that album full of reggae covers, she's flying red gold and green on her mic even in 1992. Originally sung by Bob Marley, the song was written as a speech for Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassi I. I think I forget just how stunning her voice is, how bold it must have been to sing that song in a style that would only be recognized by folks in Ireland and to everyone else would just be stark and eerie, and just how sharp/vulnerable she looked when she shaved her head.
